“Dare” Conjugation in Italian – A Comprehensive Guide for Learners

Dare is a very common and “generous” verb in Italian. It’s also a false friend, because its meaning is very different from “to dare” in English! In this lesson, we’ll see the dare conjugation in all its tenses, with many examples of its use.

Let’s get started right away!

Dare: What it means and when to use it

Dare is a direct translation of the verb “to give”, as in:

  • L’uomo alla donna un fiore.
The man gives the woman a flower.

It is a transitive verb. This means that it can be directly followed by a direct object. It also has a reflexive form, darsi, which can be translated as “to give oneself”:

  • Marco si dà una pacca sulla spalla.
Marco gives himself a pat on the back.

What other meanings does dare have? Here are the most common ones!

Dare as “to give out, to distribute, to deal”

  • Il nonno sette carte a tutti i giocatori.
Grandpa deals seven cards to each player.

Dare as “to entrust, to give custody of”

Before we go on vacation, we will give our house keys to our neighbors.

Dare as “to lend”

  • Ti darò la mia PlayStation solo per il fine settimana.
I will give you my PlayStation just for the weekend.

Dare as “to donate”

  • Ho dato mille euro in beneficenza.
I donated 1,000 euros to charity.

Dare as “to concede, to give something up”

  • Il ragazzo il suo posto sull’autobus a un anziano.
The boy gives up his seat on the bus to an older man.

Dare as “to pay”

  • Quanto hai dato al meccanico per riparare il motore?
How much [money] did you give the mechanic to fix the engine?

Dare: Conjugations

Let’s now take a look at the dare conjugation in Italian. Don’t be afraid: it may look intimidating because each subject has its own ending, but many tenses are actually made up of a helper verb (in our case, avere, “to have”) and the past participle of dare, which is dato.

If you are still a beginner, the most important tenses to learn are:

  • the present tense
  • the imperfect tense
  • the present perfect tense
  • the future simple tense
  • the imperative tense

Intermediate learners would do well to learn these tenses:

  • the present conditional tense
  • the present subjunctive tense
  • the imperfect subjunctive tense
  • the past perfect subjunctive tense
