We will then delve into some basic <em>entender <\/em>conjugations and explore some more challenging tenses. We will wrap things up by discussing some idioms and phrases. We\u2019ve had plenty of those before, so we know you\u2019ll have this conjugation down in no time!<\/p>\n<p>In Spanish, the infinitive form of the verb always ends in \u201c-ar,\u201d \u201c-er,\u201d or \u201cir.\u201d The first part of the verb is called a stem (the \u201c<em>entend<\/em>\u201d in \u201c<em>entender<\/em>\u201d) and always remains the same for regular verbs.<\/p>\n<p>Stem-changing verbs are those that change the last vowel of the stem in some conjugations. For <em>entender<\/em>, the second \u201ce\u201d changes to<em> \u201c<\/em>ie\u201d in some cases, as we\u2019ll see below. There are several words in Spanish with a similar meaning to <em>entender<\/em>. We will cover five of these below and include an example for each.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-7151-_3wpep2g02dtc\"><\/a><strong>Comprender<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This verb is the equivalent of \u201cto comprehend,\u201d but is used more commonly in Spanish than its English counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>No <\/em><strong><em>comprendo <\/em><\/strong><em>ni una palabra de este documento. <\/em>(I don\u2019t understand a single word in this document.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-7151-_j7tqke9x5pzz\"><\/a><strong>Captar<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Captar<\/em> is closer to \u201cget\u201d or \u201cgrasp\u201d in the context of knowledge or meaning. Its usage can be formal or informal depending on the context. In a different context, the verb can also mean \u201cto capture\u201d or \u201cto gain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nadie <strong>capt\u00f3 <\/strong>el chiste. (<em>No one got the joke<\/em>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Esta novela <strong>capt\u00f3 <\/strong>mi atenci\u00f3n. (<em>This novel gained\/got my attention.<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-7151-_eo7zf69ra3pv\"><\/a><strong>Descifrar<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As you might expect, this verb translates as &#8220;decipher.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No pudimos <strong>descifrar<\/strong>lo. (<em>We couldn\u2019t decipher it<\/em>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-7151-_tutz208pskqu\"><\/a><strong>Asimilar<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Just like <em>descifrar<\/em>, we bet you know what <em>asimilar <\/em>means. It is the equivalent of \u201cto assimilate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Asimilamos <\/strong>muy bien el concepto. These are the infinitive, the gerund and the participle. Spanish verbals function as nouns, adjectives and adverbs instead of actual verbs. That might sound a bit complex, but the examples below will clear things up.
