It\u2019s the part of your study where you have to peer under the hood of your car and get a feel for how the engine works. Although it can be tempting to skip the study of Dutch tenses and verb conjugation, taking a little time to familiarize yourself with Dutch grammar rules is one of the fastest ways to improve your studies and improve your fluency.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-6400-_4d7wx59m3afm\"><\/a>The Basics of Dutch Tenses and Verb Conjugation<\/h2>\n<p>Before we can touch on Dutch tenses, we need to know a little bit about verb conjugation. In a nutshell, conjugation defines how a verb changes depending on its tense (referring to the past, present, or future) and the people it involves (I, you, they, etc.) When reading up on this topic, the two words you will inevitably encounter are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stem<\/strong>: Also referred to as a verb stem or a crude stem, this is the most basic form of a word. It is the foundation we build on to define the tense of the word and to conjugate.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">Infinitive<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">: This refers to the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">-en<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"> sound placed on the end of a stem to create the infinitive form.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<table width=\"576\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\">\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td width=\"266\">\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Stem<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"266\">\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Infinitive<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td width=\"266\">\n<p align=\"center\">drink<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"266\">\n<p align=\"center\">drinken<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td width=\"266\">\n<p align=\"center\">werk<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"266\">\n<p align=\"center\">werken<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td width=\"266\">\n<p align=\"center\">denk<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"266\">\n<p align=\"center\">denken<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>We will go into how these are used in sentences shortly, but for now, this is a fantastic rule to help you incorporate new vocabulary as you discover it. As an example, if you heard someone say, \u2018<em>zij dansen<\/em>\u2019, you would know to strip off the <strong>-en<\/strong> to create the stem verb \u2018<em>dans<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-6400-_91z7a6y352r\"><\/a><strong>Short and Long Vowel Verbs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As with most things, however, it\u2019s never quite that simple. It\u2019s important to note that the spelling of the stem verb can be slightly different depending on whether it\u2019s a long or short vowel verb.<\/p>\n<p>All three of the examples provided above are short vowel verbs. Finding the stem from a short vowel infinitive is as simple as stripping off the <strong>-en<\/strong>. Other than that, the spelling remains exactly the same. However, long vowel verbs are slightly different. To find the stem for \u2018<em>vuren<\/em>\u2019, we remove the <strong>-en<\/strong>, which gives us \u2018<em>vur<\/em>\u2019. We then double up the last vowel in the word to give us \u2018<em>vuur<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in any doubt, I find that it helps to say the word in question out loud. For example, \u2018<em>vergeten<\/em>\u2019 becomes \u2018<em>verget<\/em>\u2019 when we strip off the infinitive. Say \u2018<em>verget<\/em>\u2019 out loud, using what you know about Dutch pronunciation, and you\u2019ll find it sounds too short and clipped. From here, it\u2019s easy enough to determine that \u2018<em>vergeten<\/em>\u2019 is a long vowel verb, and the spelling of the stem should be altered to \u2018<em>vergeet<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-6400-_yf4rfm54rr89\"><\/a><strong>Stem Verbs: Rules and Exceptions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the above, here are a few more things to keep in mind when working with verb conjugation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Syllables in Dutch never end in two consonants that are the same. For example, \u2018<em>drukken<\/em>\u2019 becomes \u2018<em>druk<\/em>\u2019 instead of \u2018<em>drukk<\/em>\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"left\">Infinitive verbs ending in <em>i\u00ebn<\/em> become stem verbs ending in<em> ie<\/em>. As an example, <em>\u2018ruzi\u00ebn\u2019<\/em> becomes <em>\u2018ruzie\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Stem words never end in <em>v<\/em> or <em>z<\/em>. To do this, the speaker will add some indication of the time when the action is to take place. When speaking in the past tense in Dutch, there are two main categories. These are the perfect past tense and the simple past tense. For now we will just look at the perfect tense.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-6400-_1m2dno8j8wjb\"><\/a><strong>Perfect Tense<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When using the perfect tense, it\u2019s important to remember that there are two sets of rules depending on whether you are using regular or irregular verbs. Regular verbs follow a set pattern of conjugation, while the conjugated forms for irregular verbs will need to be memorized.<\/p>\n<p>For now, we will look at how to use the perfect tense with regular verbs. The formula for this consists of a combination of \u2018<em>hebben<\/em>\u2019 or \u2018<em>zijn<\/em>\u2019 + the perfect tense participle. If the crude stem ends in c, f, h, k, p, s, or t, then the perfect past tense will end in <strong>-t<\/strong>. A crude stem is the infinitive form with the <strong>-en<\/strong> stripped off. The stem is the final verb form after any alterations have been made in addition to just taking off the <strong>-en<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This becomes important when looking at verbs ending in <em>v<\/em> and <em>z<\/em>. As stem words can never end in <em>v<\/em> or <em>z<\/em>, we replace the <em>v<\/em> in a crude stem with an <em>f<\/em>, and the <em>z<\/em> with a <em>s<\/em> to create the stem verb.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-6400-_s8mnkbjeqsir\"><\/a><strong>Exceptions to the Rule<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One exception to the rules outlined above is any stem verb that begins with <strong>be-<\/strong>, <strong>er-<\/strong>, <strong>her-<\/strong>, <strong>ver-<\/strong>, <strong>ge-<\/strong>, or <strong>ont-<\/strong>. In these instances, the conjugated verb will not begin with <strong>ge-<\/strong>. An example of this is \u2018<em>verwachten<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<table width=\"562\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\">\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td width=\"165\">\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Stem<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"167\">\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Infinitive<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"165\">\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Perfect Past<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td width=\"165\">\n<p align=\"center\">verwacht<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"167\">\n<p align=\"center\">verwachten<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"165\">\n<p align=\"center\">verwacht<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>In the case of \u2018<em>verwachten<\/em>\u2019, it seems unusual in how it conjugates, but it follows all of the rules specified above perfectly. To find the crude stem of \u2018<em>verwachten<\/em>\u2019, remove the <strong>-en<\/strong> to create \u2018<em>verwacht<\/em>\u2019. To find the perfect past conjugation of this verb, we know not to add <strong>ge-<\/strong> to the beginning, as the crude stem begins with <strong>ver-<\/strong>. As the crude stem also ends in <strong>-t<\/strong>, we know the perfect past verb will end in <strong>-t<\/strong> and not <strong>-d<\/strong>. However, as Dutch syllables never end in identical consonants, we do not add an additional <strong>-t<\/strong>. Therefore, the perfect past conjugation of \u2018<em>verwachten<\/em>\u2019 is \u2018<em>verwacht<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-6400-_ibh6qppdmt6x\"><\/a><strong>Irregular Verbs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Aside from conjugating regular verbs, we can also conjugate irregular verbs. While regular verbs follow a set of rules, irregular verbs don\u2019t. There is unfortunately no other choice than to memorize all the different conjugated forms.<\/p>\n<p>The six you will encounter most often are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verbix.com\/webverbix\/go.php?T1=zullen&amp;Submit=Go&amp;D1=24&amp;H1=124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zullen<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verbix.com\/webverbix\/go.php?T1=kunnen&amp;D1=24&amp;H1=124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kunnen<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verbix.com\/webverbix\/go.php?T1=moeten&amp;D1=24&amp;H1=124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moeten<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verbix.com\/webverbix\/go.php?T1=willen&amp;D1=24&amp;H1=124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Willen<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verbix.com\/webverbix\/go.php?T1=mogen&amp;D1=24&amp;H1=124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mogen<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verbix.com\/webverbix\/go.php?T1=hoeven&amp;D1=24&amp;H1=124\">Hoeven<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of these are common in everyday conversation and with some practice, you will quickly come to terms with all of them.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-6400-_4vqiaws0sh68\"><\/a>Dutch Tenses \u2013 The Future<\/h2>\n<p>When speaking about the future, the rule is to use a variation of \u2018<em>zullen<\/em>\u2019 or \u2018<em>gaan<\/em>\u2019 + the infinitive. Consuming media will give you a flavor for how these rules work in practice. In addition to this, there are plenty of websites and apps that will help you strengthen your skills in this area.
