Throughout my experience as a Swedish teacher, I\u2019ve noticed that the best way to learn Swedish is to not be too harsh on yourself, and be okay with making mistakes. Not following this first step is actually one of the main reasons why people stop studying Swedish \u2013 not because they\u2019re not good enough, or because Swedish is that hard to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re all human beings, and one of the most human traits is imperfection. Allow yourself not to know everything and make mistakes. Don\u2019t think about how you\u2019d look or sound. Don\u2019t be shy with your teacher \u2013 it\u2019s their job to correct and teach you; don\u2019t be shy with your classmates \u2013 they\u2019re probably feeling the same way you do; don\u2019t be shy with native speakers \u2013 they probably find it very sweet that you\u2019re trying to learn their language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting to know the culture and people\u2019s mentality is an enriching experience, and falling in love with them is definitely the best way to learn Swedish, or any language for that matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People who genuinely love Sweden and its culture find it much easier to learn Swedish than those who don\u2019t. The most devoted and successful students I\u2019ve had were studying Swedish because they were simply crazy about the Swedish culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019d say that a good start is to get to know the three core concepts of Swedish culture \u2013 mys<\/em><\/a>, fika<\/em><\/a>, and lagom<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mys<\/em> is a term referring to creating a cosy and warm atmosphere, and enjoying yourself or the time spent with your loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fika<\/em> literally means a coffee or tea break, often with something sweet on the side. However, it\u2019s a lot more than just a break. It incorporates the concept of Mys, and it means to slow down and make some time for yourself or your friends, family, or colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lagom<\/em> means \u2018not too much, not too little\u2019 or \u2018just the right amount\u2019, and you can use it for pretty much everything: drink a lagom<\/em> amount of coffee, eat lagom<\/em>, live lagom<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
