We use the <em>dire<\/em> conjugation in French to express or transmit words, ideas, thoughts or information, either verbally or in writing, or even through gestures.<\/p>\n<p>As a rule of thumb, the translation of <em>dire<\/em> is \u201csay\u201d when there is no indirect object of the sentence, and \u201ctell\u201d when there is an indirect object pronoun, in other words, when a person is being spoken to. Let\u2019s look at two almost identical French sentences to understand the difference\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elle a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>dit<\/strong><\/span> qu&#8217;elle \u00e9tait fatigu\u00e9e &#8211; <em>She said she was tired<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Elle m&#8217;a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>dit<\/strong><\/span> qu&#8217;elle \u00e9tait fatigu\u00e9e &#8211; <em>She told me she was tired<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"post-6177-_heading=h.30j0zll\"><\/a><em>Dire<\/em> pronunciation<\/h2>\n<p>The English word \u201cdire\u201d, like <em>Dire Straits,<\/em> is nothing like the French verb \u201cdire\u201d. Not only are they completely different in meaning, they also differ in pronunciation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dire<\/em> is pronounced \\di\u0281\\, which is more like the English \u201cdeer\u201d but with a guttural \u201cr\u201d sound. Musicians from every generation have used the <em>dire<\/em> conjugation in French in their song titles, so you can use these songs to hear how the <em>dire<\/em> pronunciation sounds in context. One good example is the song <em>Allez leur dire<\/em> by Silv\u00e0n Areg.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QlHJsoRAKdE\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-6177-_heading=h.1fob9te\"><\/a>The difference between <em>parler<\/em>, <em>dire<\/em> and <em>raconter<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Native English speakers often confuse the words \u201cdire\u201d, \u201cparler\u201d and \u201craconter\u201d as they are all used for communication and speech, but they have slightly different meanings and uses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dire&#8221; primarily means to express ideas or convey information, either verbally or in writing. &#8220;Parler&#8221;, on the other hand, is used for verbal communication, including speaking out loud or having a conversation with other people. Finally, &#8220;raconter&#8221; is used for narrating, telling a story, or sharing detailed information about a series of events or experiences. Whether you use <em>le<\/em> <em>pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9<\/em> or <em>l\u2019imparfait<\/em> depends on the nature of the past action.
