But that doesn\u2019t mean you can just use whichever one you like more.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, many European languages have more than one verb that translates as \u201cto know\u201d \u2013 including Spanish, Swedish, Polish, and more. But in all these languages, each of the verbs means something slightly different. This is the case in German, too.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between <em>kennen<\/em> vs. <em>wissen<\/em> is something that confuses many new learners, but it\u2019s not actually too difficult. All you need to keep in mind is that each of these verbs is used in different contexts. So, let\u2019s look at which one you should use when.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What Does <em>Kennen <\/em>Mean in German?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In German, you use\u00a0<em>kennen<\/em>\u00a0when talking about something or someone you are familiar or acquainted with.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when you\u2019re talking about knowing a person, you would use\u00a0<em>kennen<\/em>, not <em>wissen<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to use\u00a0<em>kennen<\/em>\u00a0in a sentence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ich kenne Maria seit langem. <\/strong>(I have known Maria for a long time. \/ I have been acquainted with Maria for a long time.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kennst du das Buch von Erich Maria Remarque? <\/strong>(Do you know the book by Erich Maria Remarque? \/ Are you familiar with the book by Erich Maria Remarque?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> <em>Kennen <\/em>is often followed by a noun or a pronoun \u2013 the object that you are familiar with.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What Does <em>Wissen<\/em> Mean in German?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Wissen <\/em>is more about knowledge than familiarity. <em>K\u00f6nnen<\/em>?<\/h2>\n<p><em>K\u00f6nnen<\/em>\u00a0is a German modal verb that looks a little similar to\u00a0<em>kennen<\/em>. But it\u2019s not just the spelling that these two verbs have somewhat in common. I\u2019ve previously said that there are two verbs in German that can be translated as \u201cto know.\u201d But there\u2019s actually another verb that we must consider.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, <em>k\u00f6nnen <\/em>can be translated as \u201cto know,\u201d too. So, you don\u2019t just have to decide between <em>kennen <\/em>vs. <em>wissen<\/em>. Sometimes, there\u2019s a third option.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry, though \u2013 this doesn\u2019t happen very often! In general, the verb\u00a0<em>k\u00f6nnen<\/em>\u00a0means \u201ccan\u201d or \u201cto be able to.\u201d However, there is one commonly used exception:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ich kann Deutsch.<\/strong> (I know German.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you\u2019re trying to say that you can speak German, you can say either \u201cIch spreche Deutsch\u201d or \u201cIch kann Deutsch.\u201d This is the one common exception when you wouldn\u2019t use either<em>\u00a0kennen<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>wissen<\/em>\u00a0to explain that you know something.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, though, it makes sense. \u201cIch kann Deutsch\u201d implies that you <em>are able to<\/em> [use] German. That\u2019s why <em>k\u00f6nnen<\/em> is used.
