Have you guessed it yet? \u201cDevoir\u201d means <em>must<\/em>! This irregular verb is extremely common and important to master as it\u2019s not only the word used for <em>must <\/em>and <em>have to<\/em>, but it can also mean <em>should<\/em>. We seem to be getting ahead of ourselves, so let\u2019s take a few steps back and learn some more about the \u201cdevoir\u201d conjugation.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-4318-_heading=h.30j0zll\"><\/a>When to Use the <em>Devoir<\/em> Conjugation<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. For an obligation (must)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Je <strong>dois<\/strong> partir \u00e0 15h. &#8211; <em>I must leave at 3pm.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. For a supposition (must\/probably)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tu <strong>dois<\/strong> \u00eatre fatigu\u00e9 apr\u00e8s ce long voyage. &#8211; <em>You must be tired after that long trip.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Something that\u2019s supposed to or bound to happen\/to have happened<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elle a <strong>d\u00fb<\/strong> oublier quelque chose \u00e0 la maison. &#8211; <em>She must\u2019ve forgotten something at home.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Owing someone something<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tu me <strong>dois<\/strong> 5 euros pour le sandwich. &#8211; <em>You owe me 5 euros for the sandwich.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5. For \u201cshould\u201d using the conditional tense<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tu ne <strong>devrais<\/strong> pas fumer, c\u2019est mauvais pour la sant\u00e9. &#8211; <em>You shouldn\u2019t smoke, it\u2019s bad for your health.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are a lot of tenses in French, so many, in fact, that it can get quite overwhelming trying to learn them all. The simple future with the future endings is used to talk about a hypothetical event in the future, something further away, or without a precise date. On the other hand, the near future used with the verb \u201caller\u201d talks about more concrete or immediate plans or something that is already arranged.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Je vais bient\u00f4t <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>devoir<\/strong><\/span> dormir, je suis \u00e9puis\u00e9. &#8211; <em>I\u2019m going to have to sleep soon, I\u2019m exhausted.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>En juillet je vais <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>devoir<\/strong><\/span> trouver un travail d&#8217;\u00e9t\u00e9 pour payer mes vacances. &#8211; <em>In July I\u2019m going to have to find a summer job to pay for my vacation.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"post-4318-_heading=h.1t3h5sf\"><\/a><em>Devoir<\/em> Conjugation in the Conditional Tense<\/h2>\n<p>The conditional tense is used frequently with the verb \u201cdevoir\u201d because it\u2019s in this tense that the meaning changes. It becomes equivalent to the English modal verb <em>should<\/em>. It talks about different situations, from finding love, to following your dreams, and what each character <em>should have done<\/em> when they had the chance.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at how they use \u201cdevoir\u201d in the past conditional in the chorus:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cil aurait <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>d\u00fb<\/strong><\/span> y aller, il aurait <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>d\u00fb<\/strong><\/span> le faire, crois-moi\u201d &#8211; <em>He should have gone there, he should\u2019ve done it, believe me<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few more examples of regrets:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Je n\u2019aurais pas <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>d\u00fb<\/strong><\/span> mettre une robe blanche, la mari\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019air f\u00e2ch\u00e9e. &#8211; <em>I shouldn\u2019t have worn a white dress, the bride seems angry.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ils auraient <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>d\u00fb<\/strong><\/span> faire leurs devoirs avant de sortir. &#8211; <em>They should\u2019ve done their homework before they went out.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Tu aurais <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>d\u00fb<\/strong><\/span> l&#8217;amener \u00e0 l&#8217;a\u00e9roport, les taxis co\u00fbtent si cher. &#8211; <em>You should\u2019ve taken him to the airport, taxis are so expensive.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Si elle avait faim elle aurait <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>d\u00fb<\/strong><\/span> manger plus \u00e0 midi au lieu de se gaver des bonbons. &#8211; <em>If she was hungry she should\u2019ve eaten more at lunch rather than bingeing on candy.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"post-4318-_heading=h.2s8eyo1\"><\/a>Important Things to Know about <em>Devoir<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>The word \u201cdevoir\u201d can also be a noun, as you may have noticed in one of the examples above. In the singular, it means \u201cduty\u201d, while in the plural form it is a very common noun among children and teenagers, as it means \u201chomework\u201d.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Il est de mon <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>devoir<\/strong><\/span> de repr\u00e9senter mon pays. &#8211; <em>It&#8217;s my duty to represent my country.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Je <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>dois<\/strong><\/span> faire mes <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>devoirs<\/strong><\/span> tous les jours. &#8211; <em>I must do my homework every day.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Devoir<\/em>, just like the verb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clozemaster.com\/blog\/pouvoir-conjugation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>pouvoir<\/em><\/a>, doesn\u2019t have an imperative form.<\/p>\n<p>You may have already seen direct objects in French (compl\u00e9ment d\u2019objet direct) and you might know that the verb has to agree with the object when it is placed BEFORE the verb. The feminine objects add an \u201ce\u201d to the past participle, and plurals take an \u201cs\u201d. It\u2019s important to know that \u201cd\u00fb\u201d loses the circumflex accent in these cases.<\/p>\n<p>However, when followed by an infinitive verb, it remains invariable:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Les sommes que j\u2019ai <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>dues <\/strong><\/span>&#8211; The amounts that I owed<\/li>\n<li>Les sommes que j\u2019ai <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>d\u00fb<\/strong><\/span> payer \u00e0 ma banque &#8211; The amounts that I had to pay to my bank<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-4318-_heading=h.17dp8vu\"><\/a><em>Comme il se doit<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>This informal phrase means <em>as customary, properly<\/em>, or it can be ironic, meaning \u201cas might be expected\u201d or \u201cas it should be\u201d.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ne fais pas \u00e7a, comporte-toi <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>comme il se doit<\/strong><\/span>. &#8211; Don\u2019t do that, behave properly (behave yourself as you should).<\/li>\n<li>On a f\u00eat\u00e9 notre mariage <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>comme il se doit<\/strong><\/span> ! &#8211; We celebrated our marriage as you might expect!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-4318-_heading=h.3rdcrjn\"><\/a><em>Se devoir<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>This reflexive verb means to have a moral obligation to yourself, or a reciprocal obligation to one another.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Les s\u0153urs <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>se doivent<\/strong><\/span> la v\u00e9rit\u00e9. &#8211; The sisters owe each other the truth.<\/li>\n<li>Les \u00e9poux <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>se doivent<\/strong><\/span> fid\u00e9lit\u00e9. &#8211; Married couples have a duty to be faithful to one another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-4318-_heading=h.26in1rg\"><\/a>Whatever happens, happens\u2026<\/h3>\n<p>Wait a minute, what\u2019s that got to do with the verb \u201cdevoir\u201d?
