It\u2019s a very common verb so it\u2019s one that you ought to get to grips with as soon as possible. However, just like many of the other most frequently used French verbs, it\u2019s irregular. That means that there\u2019s no simple rule to follow, you just have to learn how to conjugate it. It\u2019s not only important to know how to use this verb, but also <em>when<\/em> to use it, but don\u2019t worry, I\u2019ve got you covered! We\u2019re going to look at the <em>pouvoir<\/em> conjugation in various tenses and the many ways that you can use this vital verb.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-4063-_heading=h.30j0zll\"><\/a>When to use the verb POUVOIR<\/h2>\n<p>First and foremost, let\u2019s look at the different reasons why we might employ the <em>pouvoir<\/em> verb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Similar to the English language, when responding to a question which includes another verb, the response doesn\u2019t need to repeat the verb (e.g. can you dance? For example, the last sentence sounds very formal in English, so instead we might say <em>\u201cDid you manage to hand your homework in on time?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-4063-_heading=h.tyjcwt\"><\/a><em>Pouvoir<\/em> Conjugation in the Pluperfect (le plus-que-parfait)<\/h2>\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve seen the pouvoir pass\u00e9 compos\u00e9, we can take it up a level by looking at another compound tense: the <em>plus-que-parfait<\/em>. This tense is used to talk about an action that happened <strong>before <\/strong>another action in the past.<\/p>\n<p>It is formed by conjugating the verb avoir in the<strong> imperfect <\/strong>tense, and then adding the past particle <em>pu<\/em>. id=\"post-4063-_heading=h.1t3h5sf\"><\/a><em>Pouvoir<\/em> in Subjonctif Pr\u00e9sent<\/h2>\n<p>Finally, we\u2019re going to take a quick look at the&nbsp;<em>pouvoir<\/em> conjugation in the dreaded subjunctive. It instead becomes <em>puis<\/em>. This is for euphonic reasons \u2013 it makes it more pleasing to the ear and easier to pronounce.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, when inverting the words to form a question, instead of <em>peux-je<\/em> we must say <em>puis-je<\/em>. Even more bizarrely, this is pronounced as if it were one word, like <em>puije<\/em>&nbsp;with a soft <em>j<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Puis<\/b><\/span>-je m&#8217;asseoir ici ? \u2013 <i>Can I sit here?<\/i><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><b>Puis<\/b><\/span>-je vous aider ? \u2013 <i>May I help you?<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"left\">Secondly, it is not only a verb, it\u2019s also a noun!
