The problem is, in school we\u2019re only ever taught to say <em>thanks<\/em> and <em>thank you very much<\/em> in French (\u201cmerci\u201d and \u201cmerci beaucoup\u201d). If you want to expand your knowledge and improve your ability to express gratitude in French, then look no further. I\u2019m going to share with you the most common ways to say thank you in French, but before that, we\u2019d better brush up on the basics\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-3779-_1lh57x6uuxe5\"><\/a>How to pronounce <em>thank you<\/em> in French<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve all said <em>merci <\/em>like <em>mercy<\/em>, and we\u2019ve all tried to correct ourselves by saying <em>mehr-ci <\/em>too. It\u2019s still not right.<\/p>\n<p>The French <em>R<\/em> is a hard sound to grasp, as it doesn\u2019t roll like the Spanish <em>RR<\/em> but it\u2019s not a hard sound like in English either. The guttural <em>R<\/em> is actually made with the back of your vocal tract, so try making a noise with the back of your throat closed, as if you were about to gargle.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, try to say <em>merci <\/em>without the <em>R<\/em>, but with the throat sound instead. Also note that the <em>ER<\/em> in merci isn\u2019t the same sound as in the words <em>were <\/em>or <em>winter<\/em>. It should rhyme with <em>where <\/em>or <em>hair<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Merci<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0<em>m-air-see<\/em> (\u201cthank you\u201d)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Merci beaucoup<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0<em>m-air-see bo-koo<\/em> (\u201cthank you very much\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve got to grips with the basics, let\u2019s take it up a notch.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-3779-_587auipwvnfs\"><\/a>Expressions to say \u201cthank you\u201d in French<\/h2>\n<p>Do you want to say more than just thank you? Or switch it up so that you\u2019re not constantly saying the same thing? Here are some variations which might sound a little more natural in certain situations\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Merci mille fois<\/strong> \u2013 Thank you a thousand times (or thanks a million)<br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">m-air-see meel fwah<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Merci infiniment<\/strong> \u2013 Thank you infinitely (or thanks a million)<br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">m-air-see an-finee-mon<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Merci d\u2019avance \/ merci par avance<\/strong> \u2013 Thanks in advance (the latter is more formal)<br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">m-air-see dav-onse \/ m-air-see par av-onse<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Merci \u00e0 tous<\/strong> \u2013 Thank you all<br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">m-air-see a<\/em><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> (as in \u201capple\u201d) <\/span><em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">tooss<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"post-3779-_8lraiql99lql\"><\/a>Formal vs. informal<\/h2>\n<p>You might already know that there are two ways to say <em>you <\/em>in French: <em>Tu<\/em> and <em>Vous<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tu<\/em> is informal, and can be used with all of your family, friends and colleagues, whereas <em>Vous<\/em> is used to show respect to strangers, people older than you and anyone deemed to be your superior for example your boss. <em>Vous<\/em> is also the plural form of \u201cyou\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We can use these pronouns to thank somebody with the following sentence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Je te remercie<\/strong> \u2013 I thank you (informal)<br \/>\n<em>juh tuh ruh-mair-see <\/em>(<em>je<\/em> sounds like the \u201c<em>sure\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in <em>treasure<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Je vous remercie<\/strong> \u2013 I thank you (formal\/plural)<br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">juh voo ruh-mair-see<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can expand on these sentences in different contexts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Je vous remercie pour votre attention<\/strong> \u2013 Thank you for listening (literally: thank you for your attention)<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Je te remercie du fond du coeur<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> \u2013 Thank you from the bottom of my heart<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We can swap <em>je<\/em> for any other person and must conjugate the verb <em>remercier<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-3779-_f3epdw2gczue\"><\/a>Present tense conjugation for the verb <em><strong>remercier <\/strong><\/em>(\u201cto thank\u201d)<\/h3>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Je remercie<\/td>\n<td>I thank<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Tu remercies<\/td>\n<td>You thank<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Il\/elle\/on remercie<\/td>\n<td>He\/she\/it thanks<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Nous remercions<\/td>\n<td>We thank<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Vous remerciez<\/td>\n<td>You thank<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Ils\/elles remercient<\/td>\n<td>They thank<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nous vous remercions d\u2019avoir assist\u00e9 \u00e0 notre mariage<\/strong> \u2013 Thank you for coming to our wedding (literally: We thank you for attending our wedding)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"post-3779-_50ibkxid5zfo\"><\/a>Sincere or sarcastic?<\/h2>\n<p><em>Thanks a lot!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>How did you read that? Did it sound like a sincere expression of gratitude or like a sarcastic retort?<\/p>\n<p>It can of course be both, depending on your tone of voice and intonation, and there is a French expression that is exactly the same.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s set the scene:<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re in a bakery, you just bought some fresh croissants, the cashier gives you your change and says \u201cpassez une bonne journ\u00e9e\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You reply with a smile \u201cMerci bien, vous aussi\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>You get to your car and someone is getting out of the car next to you, having parked so close you can barely open your door. They look at you and shrug unapologetically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMerci bien\u201d you retort, as you try to squeeze into your car.<\/p>\n<p>The first use of \u201cMerci bien\u201d was sincere, while the second was said sarcastically with annoyance. Pay close attention to the way it is said and to the way in which you say it too \u2013 you don\u2019t want to accidentally offend someone you were trying to thank. Saying <em>thank you so much<\/em> in French shouldn\u2019t be too difficult, and sometimes a simple smile can convey your sentiment, but when in doubt, use <em>merci beaucoup<\/em> instead.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-3779-_1jnd58pej34k\"><\/a>\u201cThank you for\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Merci pour is followed by a noun:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Merci pour votre aide<\/strong> \u2013 thank you for your help<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Merci pour le cadeau<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> \u2013 thank you for the gift<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Merci pour le repas<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> \u2013 thank you for the meal<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Merci de is followed by a verb:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Merci d\u2019\u00eatre venu<\/strong> \u2013 thanks for coming<\/li>\n<li><strong>Merci de m\u2019avoir aid\u00e9<\/strong> \u2013 thanks for helping me (literally: thanks for having helped me)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Merci de ne pas fumer<\/strong> \u2013 thank you for not smoking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a id=\"post-3779-_2tygwgpq00vt\"><\/a>How do you respond to <em>merci<\/em>?<\/h2>\n<p>Saying thank you is all about being polite, and knowing how to say <em>you are welcome<\/em> in French when someone thanks you shows that you\u2019re well-mannered too.<\/p>\n<p>There are several options, of varying degrees of difficulty, although most are interchangeable.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-3779-_9m6nndjl1jyi\"><\/a><em>Avec plaisir<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Literally <em>with pleasure<\/em>, the English equivalent is of course \u201cmy pleasure\u201d. It\u2019s easy to say and it\u2019s easy to use. This is a no\u2013brainer if you\u2019re looking for an easy reply to someone\u2019s \u201cthank you\u201d in French.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-3779-_n8rmv1lwfcd6\"><\/a><em>De rien<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>This is probably the most common way to respond when somebody says thank you in French. It\u2019s used frequently in everyday life, but is probably a little nonchalant if somebody is wholeheartedly thanking you for a grand gesture. <em>De rien <\/em>literally means <em>it\u2019s nothing, <\/em>which we would translate as \u201cno problem\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As far as pronunciation is concerned, there\u2019s that pesky R sound again. In Edith Piaf\u2019s song she uses the word <em>rien <\/em> to say that she has no regrets: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Q3Kvu6Kgp88\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Non, je ne regrette rien<\/em><\/a><em> \u2013\u00a0<\/em>I don\u2019t regret anything (literally: I regret nothing). She uses the word <em>rien <\/em>a lot therefore it\u2019s a great idea to listen to it for help with the pronunciation.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"post-3779-_ei8dm1plgcp5\"><\/a><em>Je t\u2019en prie<\/em> \/ <em>Je vous en prie<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>This is another phrase commonly used in spoken French but is rarely written down, most likely due to the fact that its meaning has evolved: It was originally used to give permission, and still is, but it is now used to reply to thank you as well. It\u2019s a vital expression to know and can be used to be polite in many different situations. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cServez vous, je vous en prie\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cHelp yourselves, go ahead\u201d (Literally: serve yourselves, I beg you to)<\/li>\n<li>Or someone opens the door for you and says \u201c<strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">je vous en prie\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> \u2013 \u201cafter you\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some specific examples using <em>you\u2019re welcome<\/em> in French formal and informal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cMerci pour mon bracelet, je l\u2019adore !\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u201cJe t\u2019en prie ma ch\u00e9rie\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cThank you for my bracelet, I love it!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re welcome, sweetheart\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The waiter brings your food:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cMerci beaucoup\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u201cJe vous en prie, bon app\u00e9tit\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cThank you very much\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re welcome, enjoy your meal\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-3779-_a7q1il1htsv6\"><\/a>Don\u2019t use \u201cno problem\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>In English, we can say <em>no problem<\/em> as a response to <em>thank you<\/em>. It shouldn\u2019t be used to replace <em>merci<\/em> but can be added on to emphasize your gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cMadame, je peux vous aider \u00e0 porter vos courses ?\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cMadam, can I help you to carry your groceries?\u201d<br \/>\n<strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u201cMerci, c\u2019est gentil !\u201d<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> \u2013 \u201cthank you, that\u2019s so kind of you\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"post-3779-_dls1cfmjht38\"><\/a><em>Merci \u00e0 toi<\/em> \/ <em>vous<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>If someone thanks us, and we want to reciprocate, we would say \u201cno, thank <em>you<\/em>\u201d. In French, we can drop the \u201cno\u201d and say <em>thank you to you<\/em>, keeping the emphasis on the last word, just like in English.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples that specify why we are saying thank you to show the context, however it\u2019s important to note that we can also say <em>merci \u00e0 toi\/merci \u00e0 vous<\/em> as a sentence without any explanation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cMerci de m\u2019avoir aid\u00e9 \u00e0 pr\u00e9parer la f\u00eate\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u201cMerci \u00e0 toi de l\u2019avoir organis\u00e9\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cThanks for helping me get the party ready\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cNo, thank <em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">you<\/em><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> for planning it\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u201cMerci d\u2019\u00eatre venu \u00e0 mon anniversaire\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: inherit;\">\u201cMerci \u00e0 vous de nous avoir invit\u00e9\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u201cThanks for coming to my birthday (party)\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThank you for inviting us\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: It\u2019s important to know the difference between <em>merci \u00e0 toi <\/em>(\u201cthank <em>you\u201d<\/em>) and <em>je te remercie <\/em>(\u201cI thank you\u201d). The former is used to reply to another person who said thank you first, while the latter is its own way of saying thanks in the first place.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"post-3779-_nfn3ivtuv0sk\"><\/a>\u201cThank you\u201d in French slang<\/h2>\n<p>There aren\u2019t many ways to say <em>thanks<\/em> in French slang, but adding slang words onto the end of <em>merci <\/em>can change the tone. For example, <em>thank you very much my friend<\/em> in French sounds like a bit of a mouthful.
