Adjectives agree with nouns in gender, number and case. Unlike in English, the typical place for an adjective in a sentence is <strong>after the noun,<\/strong> not in front of it. Whenever an adjective preceeds a noun, the intention is purely emphatic. Adjectives may have <strong>one or two main endings, <\/strong>the latter being more frequent.<\/p>\n<h2>Endings<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Adjectives with two endings:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><em>bun<\/em> (masc. sg.), <em>bun\u0103<\/em> (fem. sg.)<br \/>\n<em>buni<\/em> (masc. pl.), <em>bune<\/em> (fem. pl.) good<\/li>\n<li><em>vechi, veche<br \/>\nvechi <\/em>(masc. and fem. pl) old (for inanimate objects only)<\/li>\n<li><em>b\u0103tr\u00e2n, b\u0103tr\u00e2n\u0103<br \/>\nb\u0103tr\u00e2ni, b\u0103tr\u00e2ne<\/em> old (for animate objects only)<\/li>\n<li><em>nou, nou\u0103<br \/>\nnoi<\/em> new<\/li>\n<li><em>t\u00e2n\u0103r, t\u00e2n\u0103r\u0103<br \/>\ntineri, tinere<\/em> young<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: There is a usage peculiarity for <strong><em>t\u00e2n\u0103r \/ b\u0103tr\u00e2n<\/em><\/strong> (young \/ old). Whenever one refers to a younger \/ older sibling, the adjective is <strong><em>mic<\/em> <\/strong>(small), not <strong><em>t\u00e2n\u0103r,<\/em> <\/strong>and <strong><em>mare<\/em> <\/strong>(big), not <strong><em>b\u0103tr\u00e2n:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Sora mea <\/em><strong><em>mai mic\u0103<\/em><\/strong><em> este profesoar\u0103, cea <\/em><strong><em>mai mare,<\/em><\/strong><em> doctor.<br \/>\n<\/em> My youngest sister is a teacher, my oldest one, a medical doctor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><em>frumos, frumoas\u0103<br \/>\nfrumo\u0219i, frumoase<\/em> beautiful<\/li>\n<li><em>inteligent, inteligent\u0103<br \/>\ninteligen\u021bi, inteligente<\/em> intelligent, smart<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some adjectives are derived from verbal past participles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>a cunoa\u0219te \u2192 cunoscut<\/em> (past participle)<br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">cunoscut, cunoscut\u0103<br \/>\n<\/em><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">cunoscu\u021bi, cunoscute<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> well-known<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>a aprecia \u2192 apreciat<\/em><br \/>\n<em>apreciat, apreciat\u0103<br \/>\naprecia\u021bi, apreciate<\/em> appreciated (person, work)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Adjectives with one ending <\/strong>(better know as \u2018adjectives with sg.<strong> <em>\u2013e<\/em> <\/strong>ending\u2019):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><em>rece<\/em> (masc. and fem. sg.)<br \/>\n<em>reci<\/em> (masc. and fem. pl.) cold<\/li>\n<li><em>fierbinte<br \/>\n<\/em><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">fierbin\u021bi<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> hot, heated<\/span><\/li>\n<li><em>iute<br \/>\niu\u021bi<\/em> hot, spicy<\/li>\n<li><em>dulce<br \/>\ndulci<\/em> sweet<\/li>\n<li><em>limpede<br \/>\nlimpezi <\/em> clear<\/li>\n<li><em>mare<br \/>\nmari <\/em> big<\/li>\n<li><em>verde<br \/>\nverzi<\/em> green<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Some adjectives<\/strong>, most of them neologisms or name of colors, <strong>have the same form for all genders and numbers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>cumsecade<\/em> = kind, helpful, nice (for <strong>people only<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><em>atroce<\/em> = atrocious<\/li>\n<li><em>eficace<\/em> = efficient<\/li>\n<li><em>bleu<\/em> = light blue<\/li>\n<li><em>gri <\/em>= gray<\/li>\n<li><em>lila<\/em> = lavender<\/li>\n<li><em>maro<\/em> = brown<\/li>\n<li><em>olive<\/em> = olive green<\/li>\n<li><em>vernil<\/em> = light green<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Degrees of Comparison<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>Positive<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><em>inteligent<\/em> intelligent, smart, bright<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Comparative<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>mai<\/em><\/strong><em> inteligent <\/em><strong><em>dec\u00e2t \/ ca<\/em><\/strong> more intelligent than<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>mai pu\u021bin<\/em><\/strong><em> inteligent <\/em><strong><em>dec\u00e2t \/ ca<\/em><\/strong> less intelligent than<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>la fel de<\/em><\/strong><em> inteligent ca<\/em> as intellient as<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Superlative<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>cel mai<\/em><\/strong><em> inteligent (relative)<\/em> the most intelligent<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><em>foarte \/ extraordinar de\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em style=\"font-size: 16px;\">inteligent (absolute)<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> very intelligent<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a noun-adjective structure, the adjective agrees with the noun in gender and number. The G.-D. ending always applies to the first word of the structure, be it the noun or the adjective.<\/p>\n<p>Note that the G.-D. singular and plural for the feminine second term of a noun-adjective or adjective-noun structure looks like either a singular G.-D. that lost its final vowel or a plural N.-Ac.
