{"id":1992,"date":"2018-06-01T14:33:34","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T14:33:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clozemaster.com\/blog\/?p=1992"},"modified":"2018-06-01T14:33:34","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T14:33:34","slug":"romanian-nouns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clozemaster.com\/blog\/romanian-nouns\/","title":{"rendered":"Romanian Nouns: Gender and Declension Reference Grammar"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1996\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clozemaster.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/jessica-ruscello-196422-unsplash-e1527863193696.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Gender<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On the basis of their grammatical structure, Romanian nouns are divided into three classes (traditionally called <strong>genders): masculine, feminine,<\/strong> and <strong>neuter. <\/strong>The form of the indefinite article that accompanies a noun and the ending of the noun indicate the gender to which the noun belongs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Masculine nouns<\/strong> take a <strong>consonant <\/strong>plus <strong><em>\u2013u, -e,<\/em><\/strong> or <strong><em>\u2013i<\/em><\/strong> endings and the plural is marked by a final <strong><em>\u2013i.<\/em><\/strong> The <strong>indefinite articles <\/strong>for masculine nouns are <strong><em>un<\/em><\/strong> for singular and <strong><em>ni\u0219te<\/em><\/strong> for plural. Since <strong><em>ni\u0219te<\/em> <\/strong>is also the plural form for feminines and neuters, the way Romanians clearly identify the gender of nouns is by placing a cardinal numeral in front of the noun. (The Romanian cardinal numerals <strong><em>one (un, o)<\/em> <\/strong>and <strong><em>two (doi, dou\u0103)<\/em><\/strong> agree in gender and number with the noun that follows.) The <strong>definite articles<\/strong> are all inflected. Even though there are five cases <strong>(Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative <\/strong>and <strong>Vocative), <\/strong>the Nominative and Accusative have identical endings, and so do the Genitive and Dative. Therefore, within each gender, there are two main endings, in singular and plural form. (Vocative is only used with proper names and has been replaced with the Nom.-Acc. form on most occasions.)<\/p>\n<p>Each case would be defined as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nom.: <\/strong>subject case (person or thing that generates an action):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Domnul Spencer<\/em><\/strong><em> lucreaz\u0103 la Departamentul de Stat.<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>Mr. Spencer <\/strong>works for the Department of State.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Z\u0103pada <\/em><\/strong><em>a acoperit tot ora\u0219ul peste noapte.<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>The snow<\/strong> covered the whole city overnight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Gen.: <\/strong>possessive case (English \u201cof\u201d and \u201c s\u201d structures); also limited prepositional case:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Capitala <\/em><strong><em>Americii<\/em><\/strong><em> este Washington.<\/em> (possessive)<br \/>\nThe capital <strong>of America<\/strong> is Washington.<\/li>\n<li><em>Biroul <\/em><strong><em>domnului Popescu<\/em><\/strong><em> este la etajul zece.<\/em> (possessive)<br \/>\n<strong>Mr. Popescu\u2019s<\/strong> office is on the tenth floor.<\/li>\n<li><em>Nori negri treceau <\/em><strong><em>deasupra ora\u0219ului.<\/em><\/strong> \u2013prepositional case<br \/>\nBlack clouds were passing <strong>above the city.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dat.: <\/strong>recipient of message\/action case (English \u201cto whom\u201d)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Transmite-i, te rog, salut\u0103ri <\/em><strong><em>doamnei Andreescu!<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong> Please say hello <strong>to Mrs. Andreescu!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Acc.: <\/strong>prepositional and direct object case<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>S\u00e2mb\u0103t\u0103 am fost <\/em><strong><em>la film,<\/em><\/strong><em> apoi <\/em><strong><em>la restaurant.<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 prepositional case<br \/>\nOn Saturday we went <strong>to the movies,<\/strong> then <strong>to a restaurant.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Am trecut pe la libr\u0103rie \u0219i mi-am cump\u0103rat <\/em><strong><em>o carte<\/em><\/strong><em> interesant\u0103.<\/em> (direct object)<br \/>\nI dropped by the bookstore and I bought <strong>an <\/strong>interesting <strong>book.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>L<\/em><\/strong><em>-am v\u0103zut <\/em><strong><em>pe Ion la bibliotec\u0103.<\/em><\/strong> (direct object &amp; prepositional case)<br \/>\nI say <strong>John at the library.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>In the last example, <strong><em>l ____ pe Ion<\/em><\/strong> is the direct object, <strong><em>la bibliotec\u0103<\/em><\/strong> is the prepositional case.
